ATTN RSSB members:

Please continue to work towards your goal, my juniors! (: Was super glad and happy to see you all in band today! I know you all are working really hard on your running notes etc.

But, let's not forget the basics that you all should have. If you guys have not realised, the tone of each section is deproving ): It's not easy to have acquire a good tone and I don't want you all to lose it! Please work on long tone exercises before you jump straight into your running notes during sectionals.

Let's ALWAYS have this in mind that your tone affects your overall playing. Whatever intonation problem you have now, is probably due to the poor tone quality you have ):

I don't want to harsh but i really have to mention something. SLs and seniors! Your skills are almost similar to that of a sec1/2 player ): I think it's really a time for each of you to review on your playing/ teaching. Have something gone wrong? Or have you been too focused on some skills that you've neglected something else? Not enough air support? (Do running! I'm serious!) Wrong embochure? (Check with the seniors and Mr Tan!)

Everything else, including your intonation, will be better if you have a good tone. (even your running notes are clearer)

And volume! Volume is very important too. You're nothing if you can't project your sound and hit the judges right in their face! PLAY IT LOUD with good dynamics!

The way you sound in the band room is going to be very different as compared to those in the Singapore Conference Hall.

When a section is too soft to match up to the band, the band DOES NOT lower their volume and match the section. But instead, its VICE VERSA. I'm not pointing out the sections, cause i believe you know better than me. On a whole, the band really NEEDS TO VOLUME UPPPP! Try blasting on your instrument with good tone? Blast your tuning note for 4 bars of 60-80bpm and do 10 sets of it daily?

If you've been listening to the recodring of tone poem, you would have realised that you are still quite far from that! The band's standard is not there yet.

So RSSB, work harder on the different areas (INTONATION and VOLUME) that have been mentioned. Listen to Mr Tan, heed his advices and REMEMBER it! Only then will you do well. And if you're still with that laid back attitude, BREAK free from it!

The band cannot succeed if not for the combined efforts of everyone!
And as the saying goes: One for all, all for one :D

It's 3-4 weeks+ to SYF and NOPE, RSSB IS NOT GONNA LOSE HEART! So what if the band before and after you are GOLD or GOH BANDS? So what if RI and ACSI are playing on the same day as you?

You have the will, you can do it! :D

Cheers,
Jing yee
(Ex-DM, Euphonium player of 2010 batch)

P./S. This is for some who are curious, i'm currently in Catholic Junior College (:
